Woodland

When I walk in the landscape where I live, I pass places with names such as Bergemellum, Kampetorp, and Treje. These names were given by the Vikings more than 1,000 years ago. People have farmed the land and domestic animals have grazed the pasture since the Bronze Age. In a place deep in the woods called Soltvet, one can still see traces of fields abandoned in the 1350s, when the farm was deserted after the Black Death.

Now the landscape is again in transition; farms close down, and animals no longer graze the land. The forest is taking over meadows and fields. The open landscape is being slowly replaced with scrub and wooded areas.
